Well, as we all suspected, the guy from the video that spurred one of the most lasting car memes ever, has confessed in a federal court that he did in fact crash intentionally, and no, there was no low-flying pelican that distracted him. It turns out that the famous video taken by these two expert car spotters brought him down. He bought the car for $1 million, and just had it insured for $2.2 million. Now he will be going to prison for insurance fraud.

It just goes to show kids, crime doesn't pay.

Not that I have any insurance fraud aspirations but wouldn't it be smarter to do this in the middle of the night or maybe right before dawn when you could be CERTAIN that two jackasses weren't filming you from the other lane? What an utter turd of a criminal.

Wouldn't it have aroused less suspicion if he didn't crash one of the most expensive vehicles one can get their hands on? Like, maybe an actual Lambo? Or made it convincing and actually have someone drive into his Bugatti?

Because the point of the fraud was to make money, he had to buy a vehicle he expected to be able to be insured for more than he bought it for.

Really though, the insurance company was ridiculous in insuring it for that much, considering how much these things depreciate.

It was pretty unusual for someone to have filmed you back in 2009. It still happened, don't get me wrong, but it was much less common than it is now. Therefore, this guy was a genius and a criminal mastermind.

I managed to get $5,250 for my totalled Miata that I bought for $3k. So I guess it scales up.

Only problem with that is: what if they find it? Would you really want it back? Yuck. Homeless people take dumps in stolen cars man. I mean, that's what I hear....
